You know potty training is a hurdle you will soon have to overcome as a parent…but are you unsure where to start?

At SLC, we follow the child/families lead on potty training. We do not have a required age they need to be out of diapers because we believe each child progresses differently and there is no clear cut time to learn this skill. That being said, there is definitely a window parents should look for. If you are noticing your child is very interested in the toilet, notifies you when they have gone in their diaper, or has dry diapers for long stretches, these are all signs they are likely ready for potty training!

One resources we recommend is the “Oh Crap Potty Training” book by Jamie Glowaki. Her book has many similarities to the RIE/Montessori philosophy of treating children with respect, honesty, and not shaming them but sportscasting events. She does not encourage bribery or punishment, but teaching children that going potty is part of every day life just as learning to eat, drink, etc.

This learning process can take time and patience but remember…they won’t be going to college in diapers…it will click when they are ready! You can do this!
